7 Steps to Perfection - Mastering scales, arpeggios, and chords

PictureThe practice of scales, arpeggios, and chords is crucial to the development of any musician and especially to pianists. Not only does one become familiar with the sounds of each key and their placement on the keyboard, but also with these exercises finger technic is greatly improved.

Each "step" presented in Seven Steps to Perfection takes the student through all major and minor keys in systematic order:

  • Step 1: Major and Parallel Minor Scales - One octave ascending and descending, each hand alone.
  • Step 2: Major and Relative Harmonic Minor scales and Cadences - Two octaves ascending and descending, each hand alone
  • Step 3: Major and Relative Harmonic Minor Scales and Arpeggios - Two octaves ascending and descending, each hand alone
  • Step 4: Scales and Arpeggios of Step 4 in "Four Speeds" - 1, 2, 3, and 4 notes per beat; 1, 2, 3, and 4 octaves
  • Step 5: Major Scales - With tonic triad, dominant seventh, and diminished seventh arpeggios
  • Step 6: Major and Minor Scales and Arpeggios - Hands together at the octave, tenth, and sixth
  • Step 7: Scales and Arpeggios of Step 5 - Two against three and three against four
  • Chords: Triads, Dominant Seventh, and Diminished Seventh Chords; Seventh, Ninth, Eleventh, and Thirteenth Chords - In all inversions
