Principles of Harmony - Advanced music theory studies
Principles of Harmony
is a textbook to develop the musicianship of a music performer, who must learn the construction and use of chords. These principles are taught beginning with the
earliest discipline of scale formation and continuing through the entire chordal vocabulary as we know it, extending even into the harmonic experimentation of the twentieth century. The book
introduces each new element (scales, intervals, triads, seventh, ninth, eleventh, thirteenth chords, chromatically altered and interchangeable chords, melodic and original composition) with
copious illustrations followed by extensive written exercise material, enabling the student to gain a full grasp of each progressive step.
The book originated as a textbook for the standard two-year college course in harmony. It has been used both in
classroom and private study for students of upper grade school through adult ages. It is also available through correspondence study for those who would like their work supervised (which includes a hymn tune writing supplement
for those who are interested). Information on correspondence study is available upon request.
A thorough understanding of harmony is a tremendous asset to every church musician, especially one who expects to
learn to improvise hymns. It is indispensable to those who aspire to writing music for poetry, hymns, gospel songs, choruses, etc. Principles of Harmony Book - $30.00
